TOURNAMENT DATES, FEES AND ELIGIBILITY
The 4th annual Kodiak King Salmon Sportfishing Tournament will begin at Noon May 15, 2010, and will end at 7:00 PM July 31st, 2010.

Entry tickets must be purchased prior to fishing in the tournament.  Entry ticket price is $50, which allows one person to enter any number of fish into the tournament.  Entry tickets are not transferable.  Date and time of purchase must be written on the ticket stub, with the name, address, and phone number of purchaser.

Participating sport fishers must keep their entry ticket with them while fishing.

Everyone is eligible.  Participants over 16 years of age must be properly licensed to sport fish for king salmon in the Kodiak area, in accordance with regulations of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.  Fish caught by a "proxy" may not be entered.

Prior to awarding prizes, judges must certify that participants had a valid entry ticket and were properly licensed for King salmon sportfishing prior to entering the tournament.

Participants must comply with all Alaska sportfishing regulations and all other applicable state or federal boating or fishing regulations. Failure to do so will be grounds for disqualification.

SPORT FISHING AREA
The eligible fishing area for the Kodiak King Salmon Sportfishing Tournament includes all waters of the Kodiak Island Archipelago, including both fresh and saltwater.  This includes all waters circumjacent to the archipelago from Shuyak Island to Tugidak Island.  Participants may fish from shore or from a boat.

TACKLE, BOATS, AND FISHING ETHICS

  • Participants must hook, play, and land a Kodiak king salmon in a sportsmanlike manner, unaided by any other person, except that they may receive assistance in netting or gaffing fish.
  • All participants are limited to use of one rod and one reel at a time.  Use of more than one rod and reel shall be grounds for disqualification.
  • Fishing rods and reels must be in accordance with current regulations, sporting ethics and customs.
  • There are no limitations on the type of line or leader, or the type of sporting lure or bait that may be used.
  • Down riggers may be used.
  • Participants must use safe, ethical methods if attempting to catch and release salmon taken during the tournament.  Salmon intended to be released must not be gaffed, and should not be netted or taken out of the water prior to release.
  • Any participant interfering with another participant, such as by running over or crossing the fishing line of another participant while they are catching a fish, is subject to disqualification.
  • RULES FOR ENTERING AND WEIGHING OF FISH
Entry tickets must be purchased prior to fishing in the tournament and are not transferable.  It is the responsibility of the entry ticket holder to transport fish to an official Weigh-In station.

THERE ARE TWO (2) OFFICIAL ENTRY AND WEIGH-IN STATIONS; Fish can only be entered at the following locations:

    • Kodiak: at the Kodiak Adventures Unlimited charter and tour kiosk in the St. Paul Boat Harbor parking lot (except during Crab Fest; the weigh station will be moved to a nearby, accessible location.  The location will be posted on the KAU kiosk)
    • Old Harbor: at the Kodiak Sportsman’s Lodge processing facility

Bring Sport-caught Kodiak king salmon into an official Weigh-In station during the hours of operation (11 AM to 1 PM and 4 to 7 PM, daily).  PARTICIPANTS ENTERING FISH MUST PRESENT THEIR ENTRY TICKET OR ENTRY TICKET INFORMATION AT THE TIME OF THE WEIGH-IN.  Weigh-In station personnel will collect information necessary to enter the fish in the tournament.

All salmon entered into the tournament will be videotaped at the Weigh-In station.  Failure to clearly show the official Weigh-In may be grounds for disqualification.

Only fresh, unfrozen king salmon may be entered.  King salmon to be entered may be gutted or bled, but doing so shall be solely at the discretion of the participant, and there will be no adjustment of the weight.  Fish entered will remain the property of the participant.  Photographs of contestants and any fish entered will be taken and become the sole property of the tournament committee, and may be used for publicity purposes without compensation.

Any salmon brought into a Weigh-In station and entered into the tournament may be opened (gutted) at the discretion of the judging committee or their representative. Fish containing unnatural “ballast” (i.e. rocks, ice, weights, etc) may be disqualified.

Any contestant who enters or attempts to enter a king salmon caught illegally shall be disqualified from all tournament participation.  Entering or attempting to enter any fish caught using methods or gear contrary to the stated rules of this tournament may disqualify the fish and the fisherman.  Additional weigh-in rules or procedures may be imposed at any time at the discretion of the tournament committee.  Due to the cash prize amounts, cheating in this tournament could lead to felony charges.

    Entering from a Remote Location
King salmon legally taken by an entry ticket holder at locations without a nearby Weigh-In station are still eligible for entry.  It is the responsibility of the participating sport fisherman to ship king salmon to the Weigh-In stations for an official weight and entry into the tournament.  Fish to be so entered must be sent in with a verifiable photocopy of the entry ticket, all the information from the entry ticket, or the original entry ticket (Remember: Participants must keep their entry ticket with them while fishing).

There may be designated tournament representatives or agencies in the villages, as determined by the Tournament Rules Committee.  Official village representatives or agencies could administer the rules of the tournament in their area.  Entry ticket/information would have to be presented to designated representatives at the time of entry (see above).  Contact tournament officials for more information.

    DECISIONS AND DISPUTES
Decisions of tournament officials will be final.  All entered fish must be taken in a manner, location, and time permitted by applicable sport fishing regulations and these tournament rules.  Officials may disqualify a fish or fishermen for any violation of tournament rules or fishing regulations.  Purchase of an entry ticket indicates your acceptance of all rules and regulations relating to the Kodiak King Salmon Sportfishing Tournament.

Final judging will be certified by a panel of judges, to be determined by the tournament committee.  Tournament officials from KRAA and the Kodiak Lions Club are disqualified from participation in the Kodiak King Salmon Sportfishing Tournament.
Any person who has a reasonable suspicion that a fish submitted for entry was not taken in a manner that complies with applicable law or tournament rules should notify the Kodiak King Salmon Sportfishing Tournament officials - Please call 942-9059 or 486-6555 for further information.

    1. Upon notification, the officials may hold a hearing to determine whether the fish was caught in the manner required by these rules.
    2. If a hearing is held, the participant submitting the fish for entry shall be given reasonable notice of the hearing and an opportunity to appear and give testimony.
    3. At the conclusion of the hearing, the officials shall render a written decision which shall be final and binding on the participant.  All proceedings must be finalized by 6:00 PM July 10, 2010.

All contestants by entering into the tournament are subject to testing by lie detection apparatus at the discretion of the tournament committee and refusal to take such test will result in automatic disqualification.

Any participant disqualified or with a disqualified fish will be notified in writing of the reason by mail within 7 days of the disqualification.  Decisions by tournament judges will be final and binding.

The tournament committee, Kodiak Lions Club and KRAA assume no liability for changes in schedule or prizes due to circumstances beyond their control.  No refunds will be given for tournament entry after the start of fishing unless the tournament is canceled or postponed.
