The Salmon Derby generates angler excitement well beyond this season's chances of winning. Because derby fund-raising directly benefits Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association's king salmon enhancement projects on the Kodiak road system, anglers view derby participation as an investment in their sport fishing future. Since 2002, king smolt reared at KRAA facilities have been released into Monashka Creek, with the first adult return in 2005.
In 2007, smolt from the 2005 brood stock were released into the American and Olds rivers!

The
Kodiak Sport Fish Division office has acquired an additional raceway from Elmendorf Hatchery which is currently being installed alongside the existing raceway below the Monashka Reservoir. This new raceway will increase rearing volume available to the project by over 50%, and therefore allow an increase in production. Estimated time of operation: August 2009.
Shown here is Island Hydraulics loading the raceway into place after the site was prepared by Mike Anderson of Anderson Construction.
